#BACKBLAZE MAC EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE UPDATE#

I'm assuming this means that my true problem from earlier is that when I tried to force an update by clicking Backup Now, it wouldn't look at the newly re-checked drive for updates the way I expected it to. Sorry! (for you and me)ĮDIT: three hours later, I revisited the Backblaze app to find it backing up my exfat drive on its own. So even with the checkmark, it has not seemed to fix the actual problem of not backing up this drive. The Last File upload on the Settings tab is for my internal drive and for my now checked and selected external exfat drive (which is the last time it backed up before upgrading to the new MacOS). I even restarted my Mac to be sure that wasn't a necessary step also. I am able to now check the box for the external exfat drive, but even with this improvement, when I ask it to backup now, it does NOT look at all at this drive. I have installed this beta, which is reported to me as version 8.5.0.648. But Backblaze doesn't require these additional features to function. With the two PRIMARY file systems (APFS and NTFS) you get additional features like file modification notifications and "Shadow Copies" that exFAT doesn't support.

One of the reasons it didn't bubble up is that Windows users ubiquitously prefer NTFS, and Mac users ubiquitously prefer "Mac OS Journaled Extended" (and now that has switched to the new default "APFS", and Apple even auto-migrates the boot file system in place to be APFS without even asking customers during an operating system upgrade). We're working through it now, trying to bring exFAT into the fold as a fully supported filesystem in all situations. It seems to be that a long time ago there were some issues that may or may not have been exFAT related, and it became standard Backblaze policy to not allow exFAT drives to be chosen ON THE MACINTOSH ONLY, and it became standard "well known" in the support group exFAT didn't work well, and it just bobbed along like that for several years until I heard about it fairly recently. On Windows it is supported and works fine. Your support people kept pushing back and telling me ExFat wasn’t supported. It literally has to work, there is no possibly reason it doesn't work. I'm trying to work through what went wrong internally at Backblaze to make the (incorrect) claim exFAT does not work on Mac. Nobody can find any examples of it not working. ExFat works, I swear on my mother's grave it works. Something went wrong several years ago, and I don't know what that was.

Then bztransmit looks at the list and transmits files, and for that bztransmit needs to read files, and exFAT allows any process to read files so this profoundly works. The process called "bzfilelist" lists all the files and their last modified times, so if exFAT supports the concept of listing files and their last modified times (which is does) then bzfilelist will work (and obviously exFAT supports that).

I'm working with support and the development group to try to find a single issue, and so far it is a total bust, exFAT is COMPLETELY supported by Backblaze and should work fine.īackblaze is profoundly simple. We cannot produce a single situation where exFAT has an issue.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if other questions arise"ĭisclaimer: I work at Backblaze in the client team and wrote a lot of the code that supports exFAT.Īs far as anybody can tell, exFAT works flawlessly on Mac OTHER than just not being able to select it (which we are changing), and this is some sort of historical screwup. Thank you for your patience, and I am very sorry for the inconvenience. Because the Backblaze client encounters much difficulty with backing up ExFAT drives, we will not be able to back up the drive unless you reformat it. The external hard drive in question is ExFat. "Currently, we only explicitly support APFS or HFS+ on Macs and NTFS on Windows. I chose exFAT because I switched from Windows to Mac, and that was the most efficient way to transfer all the data between systems - also, there was no warning or issue by the Backblaze app itself about the drive format.īackblaze's support's answer is basically "reformat the drive", which is a non-starter because it'd require I get another massive drive to move everything from one drive to the next. Also, it disappeared in my Backblaze portal. It's been going fine since June (painfully slow), and then suddenly the other day Backblaze Config won't let me choose the drive for backup.

I've a 12TB direct attach storage for my photo archive that I've been painfully trying to get to sync over a slow, rural upload.
